Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup fresh grapes or berries
  • 1 mini cucumber, sliced into rounds
  • 1/4 cup baby carrots
  • 2 tablespoons hummus or mild ranch dressing
  • 1 hard-boiled egg, peeled
  • 1/4 cup cheddar cheese cubes or a string cheese stick
  • 57 whole-grain crackers or mini pretzels
  • 1 tablespoon sunflower seeds or dried cranberries (optional treat)

Instructions

  1. Wash all fruits and vegetables thoroughly. Slice the cucumbers into thin rounds and peel the carrots if necessary. If using grapes, you can leave them on the vine in small clusters or pull them off for easier snacking.
  2. Slice the hard-boiled egg in half or leave it whole depending on your child’s preference. Cut the cheese into small, bite-sized cubes. If you are using deli meat, roll it up into small tubes so they fit neatly in the container.
  3. Place the crackers and cheese in the largest sections of your bento box to keep them dry. Put the hummus or dip into a small, leak-proof container or a designated well in the box. Add the vegetables and fruits in the remaining spaces, ensuring the wet items aren’t touching the dry crackers.
  4. Fill any small gaps with the sunflower seeds, dried fruit, or a tiny sweet treat. This makes the box look full and exciting when it is opened. Close the lid tightly to ensure everything stays in its place until snack time.
