Ingredients
Scale
- 1 1/2 cups warm water (105-115°F)
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
- 3 1/2 to 4 cups all-purpose flour or bread flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 tablespoon dried oregano
- 1 tablespoon dried basil
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- Optional: 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese for the crust
Instructions
- Step 1: Proof the Yeast In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm water and sugar. Stir until the sugar dissolves. Sprinkle the yeast over the surface and let it sit for about 5 to 10 minutes until it becomes foamy. This ensures your yeast is active and ready to make the bread rise.
- Step 2: Mix the Dough Add the olive oil, salt, dried oregano, dried basil, garlic powder, and onion powder to the yeast mixture. Gradually stir in 3 cups of flour. If using a stand mixer, use the dough hook attachment on low speed. If mixing by hand, use a sturdy wooden spoon until a shaggy dough forms.
- Step 3: Kneading Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface. Knead by hand for 8 to 10 minutes, adding the remaining flour a little at a time, until the dough is smooth, elastic, and slightly tacky but not sticky. If using a mixer, continue for about 5 to 7 minutes.
- Step 4: First Rise Lightly grease a large bowl with olive oil. Place the dough inside and turn it to coat all sides. Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap. Place it in a warm, draft-free spot and let it rise for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.
- Step 5: Shaping the Loaf Gently punch down the risen dough to release air bubbles. Turn it out onto a floured surface and shape it into a round boule or an oblong loaf. Place the shaped dough onto a parchment-lined baking sheet or into a greased loaf pan.
- Step 6: Second Rise Cover the loaf loosely and let it rise again for about 30 to 45 minutes. While the dough rises, preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). If desired, lightly brush the top with a little olive oil and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese.
- Step 7: Baking Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom. Remove from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack for at least 20 minutes before slicing.
- Cook Time: 2 hours 20 minutes
