Delight in the thick, chewy crust and savory toppings of this homemade Sicilian pizza, perfect for gatherings and family dinners.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 1/2 cups warm water
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- 1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 tablespoon dried oregano
- 1 tablespoon salt
- Fresh basil leaves for garnish
Instructions
- In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast and sugar in warm water and let it sit for about 10 minutes until frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture and olive oil. Mix until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth. Place it in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour until doubled in size.
- Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C). Punch down the dough and spread it onto a greased baking sheet, pushing it to the edges to form a thick crust.
- Spread crushed tomatoes over the dough and sprinkle with oregano and salt. Evenly distribute the mozzarella and Parmesan cheese on top.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes or until the crust is golden and the cheese is bubbly.
- Let cool slightly, garnish with fresh basil, slice, and serve.
