Description
Enjoy crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside homemade bagels, perfect for your favorite spreads.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups bread flour
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 1 1/2 cups warm water
- 1 tablespoon baking soda
- Optional toppings: sesame seeds, poppy seeds, everything bagel seasoning
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the bread flour, sugar, and salt.
- In a separate bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water and let it sit until frothy, about 5-10 minutes. Pour the yeast mixture into the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough for about 10 minutes until it is smooth and elastic.
- Place the kneaded dough in an oiled bowl, cover it with a clean cloth, and let it rise until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
- Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C) and prepare a large pot of boiling water with the baking soda added. Punch the risen dough down and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball and poke a hole in the center to form a bagel.
- Carefully boil each bagel for about 30 seconds on each side. Then drain and place the bagels on a baking sheet.
- Sprinkle selected toppings on the bagels before baking if desired.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown. Allow to cool before serving.
Notes
