Description

Enjoy crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside homemade bagels, perfect for your favorite spreads.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups bread flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 1 tablespoon baking soda
  • Optional toppings: sesame seeds, poppy seeds, everything bagel seasoning

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the bread flour, sugar, and salt.
  2. In a separate bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water and let it sit until frothy, about 5-10 minutes. Pour the yeast mixture into the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough for about 10 minutes until it is smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the kneaded dough in an oiled bowl, cover it with a clean cloth, and let it rise until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  5. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C) and prepare a large pot of boiling water with the baking soda added. Punch the risen dough down and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball and poke a hole in the center to form a bagel.
  6. Carefully boil each bagel for about 30 seconds on each side. Then drain and place the bagels on a baking sheet.
  7. Sprinkle selected toppings on the bagels before baking if desired.
  8. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown. Allow to cool before serving.

Notes

Store cooled bagels in a sealed plastic bag at room temperature for up to 2 days, or freeze them in an airtight container for up to 3 months.
