Description
Delightful homemade bagels with a crispy exterior and chewy interior, perfect for breakfast or snacks.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 1/2 cups warm water
- 1 tablespoon malt syrup or honey (optional)
- Sesame seeds or poppy seeds (for topping, optional)
Instructions
- In a bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until foamy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms, then knead for about 10 minutes.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise until it doubles in size, about 1 hour. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Bring a large pot of water to a boil and add malt syrup or honey, if using.
- Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces, shape them into balls, and poke a hole in the center to form bagels. Boil each bagel for 30 seconds on each side, then transfer to a baking sheet. Sprinkle with sesame or poppy seeds, if desired. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown. Allow to cool before serving.
