Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 slices of high-quality deli turkey or ham
  • 1 hard-boiled egg, peeled and halved
  • 1/4 cup sharp cheddar cheese, cubed
  • 1/2 cup cucumber, sliced into rounds
  • 1/2 cup cherry tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons classic hummus
  • 1/2 cup red grapes or berries
  • 1 small handful of whole-grain crackers or pita bread triangles
  • 1 teaspoon salt and pepper (for the egg)

Instructions

  1. Take your deli meat slices and roll them tightly into cylinders. This makes them easy to grab and helps them fit perfectly into the smaller compartments of your bento box. Slice your pre-boiled egg in half and sprinkle a little salt and pepper on top for flavor.
  2. Wash and dry your cucumber and cherry tomatoes thoroughly. Slice the cucumber into thick rounds. If the cherry tomatoes are particularly large, you can slice them in half, but leaving them whole helps prevent them from getting mushy if you are packing the box a day in advance.
  3. Place the rolled turkey and the hard-boiled egg halves in the largest section of the box. In the adjacent section, add your cheese cubes and crackers. If your box doesn’t have a built-in divider for wet items, use a small silicone cupcake liner to hold the hummus so it doesn’t touch the crackers.
  4. Fill the remaining gaps with your cucumber slices, cherry tomatoes, and grapes. Try to group colors together to make the box look vibrant. Ensure everything is packed snugly so the food doesn’t shift around too much during transport.
  5. Close the lid securely. If you aren’t eating it immediately, place the bento box in the refrigerator. If you’re heading out, tuck it into an insulated lunch bag with a small ice pack to keep everything crisp and safe to eat.
